Successful Resume Writing Secrets

Want to know how to write a resume that separates you from your competition? Follow the guidelines in this article.

As a senior corporate leader for many years, and later, as a small business owner and management consultant, I have reviewed countless resumes, and I have also submitted resumes as a job seeker. I have learned that there are principles that must be included when writing a winning resume.

And, as you will see, free “cookie cutter” templates and samples that abound on the internet are only partially useful in writing a great resume. They will not differentiate you sufficiently. The real key is in constructing the resume as a strong sales and marketing piece.

Whether you are senior manager, a college graduate, own your own business, are looking to change careers; or are using a resume within your own organization, everyone will benefit from a current, well written resume. There are many different resume types and each is served by a slightly different format, but they all should follow similar principles.

Let’s start with a question: what is the purpose of a resume? If you answered something that sounds like: “to capture all the things I’ve done in my career so an employer will see just how good I am and hire me for a zillion dollar salary”, you would be wrong! If you answered, “the purpose of a resume is to get an interview” you would be correct! Your resume is a strategic marketing document that makes an employer want to call you in for an interview.

Mindset and Preparation

Before you pick up a pen to write a single word, you need the right mental preparation for writing a resume. Be thorough about this because many times people take important things for granted – we use a 21 point questionnaire to make sure we have captured all important information.

Organize all of the relevant information – write down a list of:

o Problems that you have solved

o Character traits that make you different and effective

o Work history

o Accomplishments..

Put yourself in the employer’s shoes – Today an employer gets hundreds of applications for a single advertised job. So how do you think they will they make their choices of which person to interview? If you answered, the first lines of the resume, usually the objective, have to catch her eye very quickly, you would be right again! You want your resume to be remembered. Make it easy to see how you are a good candidate for the job.

Have a very specific objective in mind. The resume should be written for the specific job that you are trying to get. This will help you write a resume that includes keywords that match the job description, and makes you look like a tailor-made prospect for the job. Always remember though to be truthful in whatever you say.

Be ruthless about excluding, or de-emphasizing job experiences that are not relevant, or not helpful, as long as it doesn’t create a large gap in employment history. For example, a part time job at McDonald’s may not be helpful in landing a statistician’s job after graduation.

If you are over 50, you may want to exclude very early jobs that are less important. This strategy can make your resume look more current, minimize any obstacles, and increase the probability of getting the interview. As an alternative, extract the skills that you learned from the excluded jobs and put them in a qualification statement. Be selective about what you include, but be truthful.

Plan to include a “Power Cover Letter” that is addressed to a specific person in the company, and in it, highlight the most impressive parts of your resume that are important to your employer. Since many people do not do the cover letter, doing so, can set your resume apart, communicate why you are different, and enhance their interest in your resume.

Style

With these principles in mind, you need to also write a resume with style.

For resumes that are submitted electronically on job boards, some of these style points will not apply since they force you to squeeze your information into a specific, impersonal electronic format. And because of that it is even more important to write your resume using the above principles in mind, and then format it especially for electronic submission.

Resumes submitted online are usually parsed and read by computers that look for specific information. They score these resumes and reject those that do not meet certain criteria. All this is done before the resume is read by any human.

These software systems – Applicant Tracking Software (ATS) ignore some of the creative formatting, and subheadings that are advantages in hard copy resumes. It is therefore important to format these in a way that is optimized for computer scoring.

We use the Preptel System to test our version of the electronic resume for computer compatibility before submitting it.

I would recommend that you avoid these electronic formats if you can. Do some research and send a hard copy resume on quality paper and matching envelope, directly to the individual in the department where you are seeking a job. It helps if you know someone employed there, that is willing to be positive about you, and that you can reference in your cover letter.

In any case, when they receive it, they will forward your resume on to the right people. If the company insists that you follow their electronic submission guidelines, do so, but you may have already succeeded in establishing yourself as a person who takes initiative – a nice little character builder image boost. Submit both a paper version and an electronic version if you can.

Hard Copy Style Points:

ยท The basic components of a resume include:

o Job objective (what you want to accomplish)

o Experience (where and when you worked what jobs)

o Accomplishments (what you achieved)

o Capabilities (your skills)

o Education (your schools, majors, thesis)

Format these components so they fit your personal experience, e.g., a college graduate with little experience should highlight his education first. Generally, Job experience in a chronological format works best if there is uninterrupted employment. If there are interruptions you may want to change the format to highlight your accomplishments and capabilities first, and then an experience summary.

Be specific throughout – include concrete, quantifiable information particularly in the accomplishment summary

Use action verbs, not passive verbs wherever possible, i.e. use: “trained sales people to increase revenue” instead of “my department’s revenue’s increased”

  • Use white space to focus the reader’s attention
  • Use Fonts that are easy to read
  • Spell and grammar check your document
  • Use bullet format to highlight the most outstanding achievements

Use small blocks of text (A guideline is no more than two lines in a bullet or four lines in a paragraph)

Don’ts

Never do or include this stuff:

  • Bright colored paper (white, off white, and light gray are fine)
  • Cheap paper
  • Small fonts (less than 12 pt.)
  • Multiple fonts
  • Typos
  • Your picture
  • Salary expectations
  • Personal data
  • Reasons for leaving last job

Finally consider getting a behavioral style assessment that will highlight characteristic traits that will give you something to talk about either in the resume or in the interview. A DISC assessment highlights your traits in leadership, working with others, steadiness, and how you deal with rules and regulations. They are inexpensive and give you great insights into your own behavioral style.

Learning how to write a resume is an exercise in personal marketing, and it can give you an edge over your competition that could mean getting that job you’ve always wanted – you know – the one that also earns you more money to do the things in life that you want to do.

I hope you have picked up a few ideas for how to write a resume. If you are feeling like you need additional help in writing your resume, you can always have a professional resume writer write your resume or bio.

Crate Training A Puppy – How to Train a Dog

Crate training a puppy is very useful for pet owners as it is both a great way to transport your pet, a good bed for your dog, and it’s also a splendid method to use for house breaking a dog! This guide on crate training a puppy will show you exactly how to train your dog to love being in crates!

The Benefits of Crate Training

The many benefits of crate training puppies include the fact that it can reduce your dogs anxiety of being separated from others, it can be used as a tool to avoid their destructive behaviors and habits, and it is a good way to keep them away from household items which can be dangerous to them.

In addition to this, crate training a puppy is always easy to travel with in cars and makes for a smooth plane ride that they won’t be traumatized by.

Preparing Your Crate

The best way to successful train your dog to enjoy the crate is to introduce a crate to them throughout their life on a consistent basis. This way they won’t be afraid of a crate or associate it with negative things. They’ll know what it is and how it’s not a bad thing.

To prepare the crates for your puppy to use, it is best to take off the top of the box as well as the door. If the top can’t be screwed off, just remove the door. This will make it less “evil” looking for your dog.

Be sure to provide the extra added amenities to the crate as well. This includes a bedding for the floor such as towels, blankets, etc. In addition, it is advisable to put water into the crate as well if your puppy is going to be spending multiple hours in there. If they’ll only be in there for less than two hours, they should be fine.

Only Use When you’re Home At First

One essential thing you must do when crate training a puppy is only use the crate when you are home with your pup. Place the crate next to where you’ll be. This will encourage your dog to explore in the place and not feel as if he or she will be isolated by going in.

A good way for how to train a dog to go into the crates is to place doggie treats or toys inside of it. His will encourage them to want to explore inside of it. When they do go inside, be sure to praise them. This will get them to associate “good things” with going in.

Crate Training Don’ts

There are a few things you must NOT do when trying to crate train your puppy. Doing these will make a very unpleasant experience for your dog and often times makes them hate being in the crate.

Hot Weather Days

Never place your dog into a crate when the weather is really hot. Being in such a confined area in hot weather is not only uncomfortable, it can be dangerous for specific types of dogs!

Avoid Excess Water Before Usage and Be Sure They’ve Eliminated

If your pet has drank a lot of water do not place them into a crate. Wait till they have eliminated. Dogs hate peeing in the same place where they are hanging out around. Also, be sure that your pet has eliminated before placing them in there.

Don’t Crate Train Young Puppies

Puppies that are very young should not be crate training. Because of their weak bladder control, they will often pee in the crate. This is very unpleasant for them. In addition, puppies do not like being left alone.

Don’t Use Certain Collars

Certain types of collars are easy to get stuck in the wires of the crate. This can lead to choking and other uncomfortable experiences for your pet. Be sure that you either take off the collar or use a good collar that won’t get stuck.

Don’t Use if Your Pet Is Ill

Never place your dog in a crate if they are sick or have worms.

Punishment

Do not ever use crate training as a punishment means. As appealing as it sounds having your dog locked up, it can make them permanently hate the crate, and maybe even you.

How to Write a Letter to Your Child’s Elementary School

If you have a child in elementary school who has special education needs, you will need to know how to write letters to the school. You want your letters to express a desire to work collaboratively for the benefit of your child. By communicating and sharing information with the school, you encourage the school to communicate and share information with you in return.

Your very first letter to the school should be a letter describing your child. His or her strengths and interests, likes and dislikes, special skills and odd behaviours, any health issues, and any relevant experiences that you want to share with the school that might help them understand your child better.

Your future letters might be to request information or clarification, or request a particular program or service, or it might be to document an incident that occurred.

If you are angry with the school because of an incident that has occurred or because of an action that has not been taken, my advice is to get started right away to write down all your thoughts and feelings. Go on… get them ALL out. This one is for you – for your emotional health and wellness. When you are finished, tear it up and start again.

Pretend that you are writing to someone who doesn’t know you, your child, or the current situation. You may want to send a copy to the director of education who may not know you, your child, or the situation. Keep in mind that letters that you write now will be filed in your child’s Record of Education (ROE) and may be read by different school administrators or the minister of education years later. So provide some background information but write the letter with only as much detail as necessary so that a stranger would understand the situation from your point of view. Try not to repeat yourself and don’t be too wordy. If the letter goes on and on the reader will lose interest and the letter will lose impact.

Face to face communication vs. written communication

When we communicate face to face, we have the benefit of immediate feedback and answers to our questions. We can also listen to other’s point of view and answer their questions. This allows us to steer our communication message in one direction or another depending on the other side’s comments, questions and answers. In addition, we have the benefit of non-verbal communication and if we’re talented, we can ‘hear’ what’s not being said. One danger of face to face communication is that we often get side-tracked and go off on less important issues than the ones that we intended to address. Another danger is that you can’t take back something once it has been said.

When you write a letter, you have the luxury of deleting something you wrote and re-writing it. After you have written the letter DON’T send it right away. Sleep on it. Chances are you will think of something else that you want to say, or a different way of saying it so that it is more effective. Don’t be judgmental and never demand, threaten, blame, or show your anger or frustration. Keep your feelings and emotions out of the letter. You want to keep the reader interested, not defensive or anxious. Stick to factual information and keep your opinions to a minimum.

Before you write a letter to the school you should ask yourself; what is the purpose of this letter? What am I trying to accomplish? Is it to request information or implementation of a program or service? Is it to provide information to the school about your child’s needs? Is it to decline a suggestion or a request made by the school principal? Is it to complement the school staff on a job well done? Is it for the purpose of documenting an incident?

If you are writing an important letter to an elementary school, it should be like a business letter. Make sure that it’s polished and professional. Begin your letter chronologically and develop it chronologically. Make sure that it is interesting and easy to follow.

Proofreading your letter

When reviewing your letter for content, spelling and grammar, always read your letter aloud and read every word. Don’t let your mind assume that words are there when they’re not. If possible, have someone else read it and provide feedback regarding the tone of the letter. Does the letter make your point or accomplish your goal? Effective letter writing skills are a key part of successful advocacy. Take the time to get it right, before you send it to your child’s elementary school.

Canine First Aid – Conduct a Dog “Head to Toe” Exam – Part II

Conducting a periodic dog head to toe examination is crucial to your pet’s health. Because your dog can not speak, you need to keep an eye on its medical condition. Medical people call this monitoring your dogs ‘signs’ and ‘symptoms’.

You can locate a pulse area for your dog just inside the crease of the hind leg where it joins the abdomen. Count the beats for 15 seconds. If you multiply by 4, that will give you the number of beats per minute.

A large dog normally has a resting heart rate of about 60 – 90 beats per minute and a medium sized dog about 70 – 110. Expect small dogs to have a heart rate in the range of 90 – 120 beats. The reason why I mention ‘a resting heart rate’ is to remind you that exercise or running will elevate the heart rate and give you an artificially elevated reading.

The Manual Dog First Aid Examination

Now that we have examined the airway, breathing and circulation and ruled out any need for emergency intervention, we can casually do a head to toe manual dog examination. (NOTE: Any Airway, Breathing or Circulation type of problem will require emergency intervention, a call to a Pet Ambulance, or an immediate trip to an animal hospital or Vet clinic).

Exam Your Dogs Head

I like to start at a dogs head and work toward’ s the rear. Look at your dogs eyes. They should be bright and clear. There should be no evidence of pus or greenish-yellow discharge or excessive tearing – any of which may indicate an infection.

Palpate (or feel) the head and feel for any bumps or tender areas. Look at the nose. It should not be runny or have any discharges.

(Do not forget to praise your dog for their co-operation).

Drop down to your dogs teeth and gums. The teeth should be clean, with no chips or breaks. The gums should be a healthy looking pink color and the breath should not be overly fowl smelling.

Congratulations. You have just conducted some of the necessary parts of a successful dog head to toe examination.

The Benefits Of Credit Education And Financial Coaching

With the right financial advice behind them, many individuals will experience the myriad benefits that associated with a good credit history and score.

Choosing an Agency

When the decision to obtain a financial education has been made, careful consideration must be taken to select the best agency. Before selecting a financial adviser or a credit counselor, it is important to read the fine print of any paperwork one may be asked to sign in order to prevent the possibility of creating further indebtedness carefully. Reputable credit counseling agencies should be affiliated with the Association of Independent Consumer Credit Counseling Agencies. Most agencies charge fees for their services; however, any company charging more than $20 initially should include extensive personal money coaching with their package. If the agency is making extravagant claims for a fee that seems particularly low it may be better to choose another financial agency.

Consolidating College Loans with Bad Credit

Having trouble climbing out of the financial hole you are in? Do you feel like you have hit rock bottom and there is no way to attain a good financial standing? Stop letting your bad credit ruin your financial life and stop letting your bad credit prevent you from getting a college loan. And if college loans caused your bad credit, then you may need to consolidate college loans.

It is time to get your finances back on the right track. You need to start looking for the absolute best refinancing deals that are available to you. consolidating college loans with bad credit is no different. Even if you have bad credit there are plenty of lenders who are willing to work with you. These lenders can help you consolidate college loans and give you lower interest rates.

We all know that college loans can be quite cumbersome. Often they are large monthly payments and for a recent graduate, it is not always easy coming up with this money. For some it is the first time they are out on their own paying bills every month, paying rent, and now paying a very large sum to a lender. By consolidating you college loans, you are creating a single lender with a single loan. The lender will pay off your other college loans, and give you one large loan to pay off. This means one interest rate, one lender, one loan, and only one payment per month to make.

Depending on the amount of your current loans, the number of them, and how long the loan’s term is, you can significantly decrease the amount of your monthly payment. This means significantly increasing the amount of money you save over time. There are lenders out there who can reduce your payments by 20%, 30%, and sometimes as much as 50%! If you can take this new single loan and extend it out over a longer time frame, then you will most likely be able to save almost 50% on your monthly payment. Keep in mind that the longer the term of the loan is, the more interest you will be paying in the long run.

While you might be paying more over the term of the loan, you will have much more affordable monthly payments on your college loan. This means you can constantly pay this monthly payment on time for the full amount every month. Are the bells going off in your head? By paying these payments on time you are building up your credit rating again.

So where do you start? Believe it or not, a good place to start is with an existing lender. They may have some more leverage because one of the loans they are paying off is from their own company. While getting their full loan amount is what they want, they also want to keep their customers around because of the monthly interest. So a lender might be able to give you a great deal just because they want to keep your business. Do not be afraid to look around as well. Taking the first offer to come along is not the best way to make sure you are getting the best deal possible. Remember that this is your money that you earn! Make the best educated decision as possible.

Consolidating your college loans can help you reduce financial stress in your life. At the same time, you will be building your good credit history. Talk with your lender today and see if consolidating college loans will help you and ask them for suggestions on leaving your bad credit in the dust.

Developing Coaching Products

Developing products should be at the forefront of every coach’s mind. Coaches that develop products are significantly more successful than coaches that don’t. A product is a packaged and branded educational resource. Your product should be targeted to a niche group, and be focussed on solving their specific problems. Your product can be packaged and delivered in a variety of ways.

Popular coaching-related products include: eBooks, eCourses, Mini-Courses, Podcasts, Workshops, Seminars, Tele-Clinics, Audio Programs, Webinars, etc.

Benefits

Coaches who develop educational products are well aware of the schedule of added benefits behind the package. Following are some examples:

Increased Credibility. Delivering high quality, branded products to your niche is one of the most powerful means to build your credibility. There is virtually no other way to accelerate your perception as an expert in your niche.

Improve your networks. Authorities in your niche are usually very willing to assist and participate in the development of products that assist their industry. Networking with these authorities will give you an immediate, highly leveraged entry into your niche. It will open many doors to Joint Ventures; list sharing! ; public forums; group meetings; etc.

You’ll become less reliant on your time. As a coach, what is your commodity? When everything is distilled down, what are you selling? Coaching? No. Happiness? No. Success? No. Health? No. You are selling your time! Time is your commodity. And when time is your commodity and you are reliant on selling your time, you! r income potential is extremely limited. You can only realistically work 8-hours a day. So the only way to earn more money is to charge more. There is a limit to how much you can charge. And when you stop selling your time (go on holidays with your family; get sick), your income stops.

Products are your escape from being time reliant.By commercialising products you rely less on time as your commodity.

Move from one-to-one to one-to-many. Most coaches sell one-to-one coaching as their core service. This restricts your time, and also limits your commercial reach. Commercialising products allows you to leverage your intellectual property by 10, 100, 1000 times. You can be selling hundreds of eBooks; eCourse; tele-clinic seats; pe! r week. Now that’s how to leverage your knowledge and time!

Applications

Once you have products, how can you put them to use for maximum affect? We’ll now investigate some ways you can use your products to increase enquiries; conversions and sales.

Building your list. In a previous edition of Coaching Inspirations, we discussed the sales funnel, and how important it is to get as many qualified prospects in the top of your funnel as possible. Using your products is a highly leveraged means to do this. Here are a few examples:

– Offer a free eBook as an incentive to join an online club; eZine; newsletter.

– Let people download a “Special Report” after subscribing to your list.

– Mention your list (education-based) on your tele-clinic call.

– Gather business cards or contacts at your seminar.

Loss Leader. You know by now the net marginal worth of your clients, and hence how much you can afford to invest at the front-end on acquiring a client. A strategy to attain client contracts is to use a ‘loss leader’. This means you make a financial loss at the front-end, knowing you’ll make gains over the term of the! life of your client. For instance, you may give away free vouchers to a group coaching workshop to members of your niche. This may cost you $100 per attendee. However, you get 90% of attendees into the top of your funnel; 30% of the them to level 2 within 3-months; 20% to level 3 within 6-months. The net result may be a $1,750 gain over 6-12 months per attendee.

Value-add. Products are an excellent way to value-add your services. For instance, you may use a 6-week ticket to your specialist tele-clinic as an incentive to upsell prospects from a 3-month contract to a 6-month contract.

Referral. Your products can be an excellent tool to incentivise referrals. You may go to the prospects in your funnel and say to them “We know you enjoy the information we provide you, and we’re sure you know other that would benefit from it. If you put us in touch with these people, as a thank-you we’ll give you this! XYZ product.”

JV Incentives. Products are an excellent way to provide incentives for joint ventures. For instance, just say you approach a gym or a health spa, and undertake some cooperative marketing. They write to their members and inform them that for a limited time they can go to your website and download a free special report ! “How To Overcome The 7 Biggest Barriers To You Achieving Your Fitness Goals, by specialist life coach ABC.” To download the report they have to give you their name and email address.

Conversion. You can use your products to improve conversion and shorten conversion time lines. For instance, offer your product as a value-add to a core service for a limited time.

Have you developed your coaching products yet?

Five Things You Need to Know About Changing Your Career Path

Sometimes your career seems to be going in the wrong direction and you start thinking about changing your career path. However, practically, it is not an easy thing to do. There are several things that you would have to take into your careful consideration first.

Job Satisfaction

Career is not just about how much you earn. That sure does matter, but in the long run, job satisfaction matters more. You can never enjoy the benefits offered by a job if you are not getting mental fulfillment. In fact, lack of fulfillment is the primary reason why people change their job at some point of time or other. On the other hand, those with 100% job satisfaction really enjoy working and have the time of their life while on the job. Therefore, you just cannot undervalue this important aspect while you are thinking about changing career. That must be your top priority.

Do You Have Those Skills In You?

Every job requires you to have a set of specific skills. So, do you have those in you? If you do not possess those skills and qualifications, you will never be able to achieve fulfillment in your career. Therefore, while you are changing career, you must take your time to know whether you possess those skills or not. If not, is it possible for you to acquire those easily or would that be tough to do?

Review Your Strengths As Well As Weaknesses

After reviewing your skills, the next thing that you have to do is to review your strengths as well as weaknesses. In order to do this effectively, you must be capable enough of taking a critical look at yourself. Focus on those career options that can easily accommodate your strengths and weaknesses. Always remember the best career option for you is the one where you enjoy being yourself and still make money.
